In 2016, Clarkson Potter, an imprint of Penguin Random House, offered me the opportunity to conceive, illustrate, and write a tongue-in-cheek satirical adult coloring book about the TRL generation music scene. As the Creative Director at The Araca Group, it was often my job to help brand new artists. Hailee Steinfeld an incredibly accomplished artist, wanted branding and apparel that spoke to her many disciplines. My concept was to rework the movie rating logo, to nod towards her oscar nominated acting career, and to tease fans of music and films to come. To see more of my work for this client, click here.
I’ve designed, illustrated, art directed, copy written, (you name it) for Wicked for about 7 years. Designing a new logo to celebrate their 15th anniversary was an excellent way to cap that time off. Used across, print, television, ads and merchandise, my final piece of work for this account reached more people than any of my work for them leading up to this campaign. Really exciting to do editorial design for Bill Murray & Jan Vogler’s touring classical program, “New Worlds”. The arrangement of international talent aimed to showcase the core of the American values in literature and music, and the bridges artists have built between the Europe and America. My approach to the design was to centralize that duality, and visualize that bridge subtly through two consistent contrasting fonts, and with the vibration of alternating the blues and the oranges. I design frequently for Broadway, which comes with it’s own set of unique and varying challenges. This design was for the revival of The Color Purple, a really wonderful production.

The phenomenal revival of Once On This Island re-contextualized the old story into a post Katrina tale of survival, myth, legacy, and community. Working on the program book, I wanted to do something worthy of the piece. I set out first, to recreate the fabrics pieces together throughout the show, the discord between them being central to the aesthetic world of the new production. The majority of the elements I wanted to be found objects, to speak to the spirit of reclamation and rebirth of the show. The fonts shift and change to emulate the varied voices and texture of the show. If you’re in New York, check this show out asap.
T-shirt designed for RUN THE JEWELS’ 2017 tour. Tried to contextualize them in the type of 90’s action movies they love.

My career really got it’s first boost from New York Magazine. When Vulture.com contacted me after some of my fan work had gone viral, they asked me to start designing fun, smart, shareable content exclusives for their site. One of my favorite projects was these print-at-home masks you could fold and wear yourself to the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises. Idina Menzel is a fun challenge to design for, since her fans love not only her solo work, but her incredible performances in anything from Wicked to RENT to FROZEN, which are properties we can’t always draw content from in her merch. This was a little tongue in cheek design about her power as a woman and a performer, that slyly references her Disney Princess status from FROZEN.

Channing Tatum and Steven Soderbergh brought their film series, Magic Mike, to the live stage this past year. Originating in Vegas, it relaunched in London with an aim for a high end, sophisticated aesthetic. I worked on some editorial, branding, and merchandise for the production. Betty Who is one of my all time favorite artists, was a blast to design this intricate little letter work for her performance at a Pride festival.
Working for a historic and beautiful New York institution as close to my heart as The Rockettes was exciting. I wanted to create a chic, elegant illustration worthy of the dancers that inspired it, with which the company could use in a variety of places like I did here with a tree formation we used on a number of products and materials. I look forward to seeing the number of ways its used in the future.

Program books for shows are a challenge given the sheer amount of information that has to go into them, but they are rewarding- as the genre of each is so totally unique to itself. With a spectacle like Jersey Boys, one takes the ‘Kitchen Sink approach’ to design: throw it all you got.

Merch has played a real central role in culture in the past few years, breaking into more traditional fashion markets and becoming more than ever the way people express their identity. Sometimes finding the “meme” in the artist can help make a successful piece because it allows the fan to feel in the know, in the club. The iconic sax solo at the top of Carly Rae Jepsen’s Run Away With Me would make a perfect idiosyncratic dad hat, I thought and I still see them around town all the time.

LGBTQ+ fans are loyal fans, because openly supporting them was appallingly taboo for too long, still is. So when an artist like P!NK openly advocates for all of her fans equally, a bond is formed with the artist. As a gay man, and a fan, it was great to work on a pride collection for her this year.
